Male vs. Female Catheters: What Is the Difference?

When first looking into using a catheter for incontinence-related issues, there are many things a new user will need to know before buying any products. Easily, the most important one is the fact that people with differing anatomy will have to buy different items based on their bodies. There aren’t many differences between male and female catheters, but they’re significant enough that you should know them.

Differences in the Products

When it comes to intermittent and indwelling catheters, the key difference between the two versions is the length. Male genitalia will require the use of longer catheters that’ll reach far enough to access the bladder. Most male catheters are anywhere from 30 to 40 cm in length, while female catheters are between 7 and 20 cm.

The difference between the two versions of external catheters is much more distinct in terms of how they look and function. Users apply male external catheters like a condom. Female external catheters must go into the urethra to stay in place, but most of the device remains outside the body.

Differences in the Processes

Fortunately, most of the differences between male and female catheters end with their design. However, the insertion process also varies a bit, so we wanted to mention that briefly as well.

In both processes, the user should wash their hands, sterilize their catheter, and find a private place to insert it—preferably over a toilet. The main difference is that some people will need to sit down to ensure the catheter goes in properly. The female urethra can be more difficult to access than the male one. Regardless of your anatomy, though, the insertion process will become easier with enough practice.
